The world's first IUCN SSC Centre for Species Survival dedicated to fungi, based at Terra, places the planet's most overlooked species group at the centre of global conservation. Fungi supports over 90% of plant life, yet remain among the least protected.

Our work includes IUCN Red List assessments for fungi and the world’s first large-scale research into their extinction risk. Working with mycologists across 186 countries, the Centre is helping close one of the most significant gaps in global biodiversity data driving action from the Middle East to the world.
ACTIVE RESEARCH GRANTS
Baseline Field Assessment of Phellorinia herculeana
Led by the IUCN SSC Centre for Species Survival Fungi at Terra, this project will establish the UAE’s first comprehensive baseline assessment of edible desert fungi, including desert truffles and Phellorinia herculeana. Combining field surveys with the traditional knowledge of Emirati and Bedouin communities, it will map species distribution, document their ecological and cultural importance, and identify potential threats. The findings will support future IUCN Red List assessments and guide the long-term conservation and sustainable management of edible desert fungi in the UAE.
