A student film programme capturing plant knowledge across generations

Terra, Expo City Dubai

Have you ever wondered how a simple plant could be used as medicine, food, or part of everyday life?

Across families and communities, there is knowledge about plants that has been passed down through generations, but is rarely written down or recorded.

Know Your Roots invites students across the UAE to capture these stories.

By speaking to a parent, grandparent, or someone from their community, students will document how a plant was used, what it meant, and why it mattered.

This way of exploring the relationship between people and plants is known as ethnobotany.

Over time, these films will form a growing collection of stories that record how people and plants are connected across cultures and generations.

Students in the UAE aged 14 and above are invited to take part.

How to Take Part

Students take part by creating a short documentary film based on a real conversation.

They speak to a parent, grandparent, or someone from their family or community, and capture a story about a plant that is meaningful to them - how it was used, what it meant, and how it is remembered.

The final film should focus on the connection between the person and the plant, and the knowledge they carry.

Selected films will be showcased as part of a special event at Terra.

All submissions will also be featured across Terra’s programmes, digital platforms, and future exhibitions, contributing to a growing record of plant knowledge.
